What happens when a top artist and a supreme maker of champagne meet? Magic in a bottle, as Hirst and Dom P demonstrate
What do Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol, David Lynch, Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons have in common? They have all partnered with champagne uber-brand Dom Pérignon to create limited edition bottles. Now they are joined in the firmament by Damien Hirst, the celebrated British artist and cow-pickler, who has created gift cases inspired by his own famed Kaleidescope series.

We at LUX think Hirst is a perfect partner for DP, as its aficionados like to call it (somewhat to the irritation of its French owners, who like to point out that the original Dom P was a monk who invented champagne in his abbey near Reims). Like Warhol, Lynch, Murakami and Koons, both Hirst and DP are a blend of high and low culture, pop and technique, beauty and popularity. The artists (and Lynch, an artist as much as a film maker) break out of the self-regarding constraints of the modern and contemporary art world to show that you can be both top-tier, in terms collectability, and populist in appeal. And Dom Pérignon demonstrates that a champagne that is almost ubiquitous in the world’s luxury restaurants and hotels can still be at the very highest tier of taste and critical ratings.

We also love DP for its dual personality (pun intended): you can drink the 2018 vintage, subject of one of the Hirst collaborations, now and revel in its delcious freshness, balance and richness; or you can cellar it until it’s 30 and find a champagne of depth, complexity and extreme refinement. Rather like Hirst’s art, it’s for connoisseurs and neophytes alike.

There are two releases of the collaboration, though, and between them we would pick the Dom Pérignon x Damien Hirst Rosé Vintage 2010 Limited Edition Gift Box. DP Rosé is a truly special and multilayered champagne, and while it’s more expensive, as we all know, great art is always worth the price.
