Retreating to the cyprus studded hills of Tuscany, LUX Editor-in-Chief Darius Sanai checks into Villa San Michele, following its major renovation

One of the most celebrated hotels in the world just got even more sublime. Anyone who has stayed at the Villa San Michele in Fiesole, above Florence, may be forgiven for thinking there wasn’t much to improve, and when your hotel was once a Renaissance-era monastery that watched down on the Medicis from its perch above the city, any refresh has to be done with the ultimate harmony.

The reopening, with 39 completely redesigned suites and rooms, sees even more of a focus on Tuscan craft, new menus from the breathtaking restaurant with terrace, and a brand-new Guerlain spa that even Lorenzo de Medici would be envious of. The Tuscan views, gardens and woodlands remain the same.
